Thu, August 28 2008

For decades the Fair at the PNE has been a showcase for young talent. Musical superstars like Michael Bublé and Lisa Brokop competed in and won youth talent competitions that helped launch their careers at the annual summer event.

The Red Robinson’s Talent Showdown, hosted by Red Robinson himself, received over 600 entries and was narrowed down to 138 semi-finalists who performed live at the Fair. The talent in the competition improves each year making it ever more difficult for the judges. Now 14 amazing finalists have been selected to compete on Saturday August 30th, 2008 for the $10,000 grand prize.

“The winner of this event will walk away with an incredible experience; performing in front of tens of thousands of PNE fairgoers; experiencing what its like to perform with a world class stage set up and technical crew; being part of Red Robinson’s event; and finally, winning a $10,000 cash prize,” says Patrick Roberge the PNE Creative Director.

Red and the PNE:

Red Robinson’s association with the Pacific National Exhibition goes as far back as 1957 when the popular local DJ staged the "Battle of the Bands" during the annual summer Fair. The program ran in 1957, 1958 and 1961, when the winner was Howie Vickers, who went on to perform with the Classics and then the Collectors. The Collectors received a contract with Warner Brothers and were a major Canadian act. In the eighties Red hosted the PNE’s "Esso Talent Search" which was aired on CBC Television. Red’s association with the PNE continued as he hosted the former Miss PNE Pageant for many years.
