wig for kids copyImagine being a child who is diagnosed with cancer, undergoes treatment and loses their hair.
At any given time in B.C., there are 350 children receiving acute cancer treatment and another 1,200 in long-term treatment. The Wigs for Kids Program at B.C. Children`s hospital provides wigs for kids from all over B.C. who have lost their hair to cancer or other serious illnesses.
This program is only possible through the generous donations of people like Jennifer Lee, who donated her beautiful locks to the cause. Donations such as hers help cut the costs of custom fit human hair wigs in half, from about $2,000 to $1,000.
A custom wig helps kids return to everyday life as their baldness is no longer something they have to answer questions about.
Wigs for Kids is hosting a fundraiser on Nov. 20 with the Richmond Sockeyes hockey club, when the Sockeyes take on their arch rivals the Delta Ice Hawks. The event will include a 50/50 draw, and prizes including BC Lions and Vancouver Canucks tickets. During the event, nine-year-old Hannah Patridge will have her hair cut off at the arena, and donate her ponytail to the cause.
Anyone with hair that is not chemically treated and is more than eight inches long can donate to Eva’s Wigs, at 950 West Broadway St., Vancouver, to contribute to this program and help kids look like themselves again.
Wigs for Kids urges the community to come out on Nov. 20 to root for their favourite team, while supporting Wigs for Kids.
