A new book celebrating the pioneer spirit of 100 B.C. businesswomen was released this month, fittingly during the annual festival of Diwali, or the Festival of Lights.
Amongst the honorees is Shushma Datt, President and CEO of Burnaby-based i.t. Media Broadcasting.
The glossy and colourful volume was produced by Women’s Enterprise Centre and represents their first published tribute to the many women they have encountered through their networks.
Women’s Enterprise Centre is a non-profit B.C. association and a leading resource for women starting, purchasing or growing a business. The services of the agency include workshops and skills development in areas such as marketing, finance and strategic planning as well as financing new business or business expansion.
Datt, along with many of the other women profiled, was at the Surrey launch of New Pioneers: Stories of 100 BC Women Entrepreneurs, and commented that it was wonderful to be included with a group of such distinguished and talented women.
“They are all innovators,” she commented. “And I really respect Women’s Enterprise Centre for developing a program that encourages women to break new ground.”
Other honourees include Sue Adams, of Bevendale Enterprises and Shelina Mawani and Nasim Dhanji of Nana’s Kitchen and Hot Sauces Ltd.
The goal of Women’s Enterprise Centre in publishing the book is to promote business ownership as a valuable career option for women.
In Canada, there are over 800,000 businesses owned by women and in B.C. 36 per cent of all small businesses are headed by a female.
Supporting women has been a familiar theme for Datt as well. Her organization was one of the first South Asian outlets to provide a forum for women’s voices regarding social issues and her top-rated television program Woman in Focus, which profiles successful South Asian women, is now in its eighth season.
